Professional Experience

Tested in Combat and the Courtroom

Before entering law school, Matt served as a tank commander in the U.S. Army. After being Honorably Discharged, he attended law school at the Georgia State University College of Law in Atlanta, GA. After graduating, he served as an Assistant District Attorney for the Douglas County, Georgia District Attorney’s Office from 2013 to 2015. During this time he gained invaluable experience in criminal felony matters as he regularly handled cases at every stage from preliminary hearings to trial.

In 2015, Matt moved home to Martinez, GA and worked as an Assistant Solicitor General for the Richmond County Solicitor General’s Office in Augusta, GA. As a result, he has extensive knowledge of all aspects of misdemeanor prosecution. He has years of experience dealing with traffic citations and traffic law. He is also highly trained in DUI law. Specifically, he has been trained by law enforcement in DUI detection and investigation and has personally handled hundreds of DUIs.

During his time in the Solicitor’s Office Matt also served in the Richmond County Accountability Court Program. He particularly enjoyed this role as he was assigned to the Veterans Court and Drug Court Programs. Matt enjoys working with Veterans and likes to see deserving people get a second chance.

Matt has practiced law before the Supreme Court of Georgia. In October 2016 he successfully argued for the State in Roberson v. State, 300 Ga. 632 (2017).

Military Experience

Matt received his undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming on a full Army ROTC Scholarship. He graduated in 2003 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and commissioned into the U.S. Army as an officer in the Armor Branch. His first duty assignment was with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) in Ft. Irwin, CA.

In 2005, as a tank commander and platoon leader, he deployed with the 11th ACR to Forward Operating Base Iskandariyah, Iraq for a one-year deployment. During this deployment, he and his platoon directly engaged enemy forces in combat on many different occasions. In 2007, as part of G3 Training and Operations for 3rd Army, he served a second year-long deployment to Camp Beuhring, Kuwait.

After five years of active duty, he was Honorably Discharged from the military at the rank of Captain and returned home to Georgia.

Today, Matt is a proud lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He is passionate about serving veterans and will do everything to assist fellow veterans, those currently serving, and their families.
